So Good It's Bad

Post by Lago PARANOIA »

So basically on the hierarchy of non-ironic entertainment, you have this scale:

So Bad It's Horrible
So Bad It's Good
Average
Genuinely Good
Awesome

To use a Star Trek analogy, Enterprise would be SBIH, Voyager would be SBIG, TOS would be Genuinely Good, DS9 would be Awesome.

Which leaves TNG. Um...

I have extremely mixed feelings about this show. In a lot of ways it's better than TOS and DS9. But in a lot of ways it's also pretty bad. SFDebris picks on TNG almost as much as VOY and for good reason, since there's a lot of stuff to make fun of from that show. And I don't just mean silly 'you had to be there to appreciate the Love Boat design' stuff, I mean 'what the fuck were they thinking in Pen Pals'. The funny thing is that the bad elements in that show bother me way more than they would in a worse show but in a weird way they also enhance the good elements. And that's ultimately the thing to keep in mind. This is a category of entertainment that gets one or many things really really right but fucks up really badly on one or more things. Sort of like So Bad It's Good things generally have one or two things unironically working in their favor but with the good|bad ratio reversed.

So I propose a new ranking; So Good It's Bad. So Good It's Bad sits between Average and Genuinely Good on the scale. And a short list of things that I think are So Good It's Bad:

Batman Returns
No More Heroes II
Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition
Final Fantasy X
Nineteen Eighty-Four
Cool Hand Luke
Order of the Stick
Justice League (non-unlimited version)

So, gentle readers, what would you consider So Good It's Bad?

Your freedom to add and change rules in the middle of the game is in direct conflict with my ability to understand that rules system before I decided whether or not to join your game.

In short, your entire post is dismissive of not merely my intelligence, but my agency. And I don't mean agency as a player within one of your games, I mean my agency as a person. You do not want me to be informed when I make the fundamental decisions of deciding whether to join your game or buying your rules system.

With TNG, it tends to vary pretty heavily from episode to episode.

Batman Returns or Batman Begins? I'd rank Batman Returns as below average, or average at best.

The only thing I can think of that fills the role of "so good it's bad" would be most of the best picture nominations for the Oscars. A lot of those films are really highly acclaimed, but watching them hurts.
My son makes me laugh. Maybe he'll make you laugh, too.

To each his own. I liked it for a long time. Now it is on past 3 weeks without updates or even an explanation. So it is neither good nor bad- simply over.
Wellll that is not entirely fair since I follow Dresden Codak which updates maybe bimonthly but at least it looks very pretty and is not something I could easily bang out in a couple hours... if I ever had such bounties of free time *sigh*.

no it's not over, that's just how burlew is. allegedly he has health problems but I think he is mainly afflicted with laziness and dramatic proclamations about his health to garner sympathy from his loyal fanbase

oots started out strong and then petered out when roy was dead for a year. a fucking year and they couldn't get a rez for him. that was ridiculous

I enjoyed FFX. And FFX-2. I have criticisms with both games, but I had fun playing them.
In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.
